Until now, the cracks in Boris Johnson's team during the Covid-19 crisis had been largely under wraps. But a surprise resignation of No 10's director of communications Lee Cain revealed a power struggle in Downing Street.

Mr Cain announced he would quit after Carrie Symonds, the Prime Minister's fiancée, effectively vetoed his promotion to chief of staff and amid an extraordinary briefing battle.

To make matters worse for Boris Johnson, his key aide Dominic Cummings was said to have been considering his position in the wake of the resignation.
