COVID-19 cases surpass 1,000 in US, authorities impose containment zone in New Rochelle

US President Donald Trump has promised a major stimulus package to combat the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus. At the same time, the number of COVID-19 infections in the country has passed 1,000. New Rochelle, which is further up north from New York City, is home to the largest cluster in the US, with more than 100 confirmed cases. A 1.6-km containment zone has been set up. The rise in cases across the US has been attributed to faulty test kits that returned inconclusive results, as well as a strategy that initially targeted too few people. Authorities have also been criticised for downplaying the threat of the virus.
