EgyptAir Flight 990 - Crash Animation
Description
EgyptAir Flight 990, a Boeing 767-300ER was a flight between Los Angeles and Cairo with a stopover in New York on October 31, 1999 with 217 passengers and crew on board.
The Crash:
On the last leg of the flight, while the captain was using the lavatory, the 767 began to enter a dive and the engine thrust was suddenly reduced to idle. The first officer then said, 'Tawkalt ala Allah' which translates to 'I rely on God'. The elevators were moved 3 degrees nose down. The phrase 'I rely on God' was repeated seven more times by the first officer when the captain came into the cockpit asking what was happening. The plane pitched down violently, causing the left engine and a bit of the left wing to break off of the aircraft. The jet then plunged into the Atlantic Ocean killing all on board. The NTSB concluded that the plane was brought down as a suicide act by the first officer, however Egyptian officials believe that it was some sort of structural failure.
