Italy ramps up spending to tackle COVID-19 as cases top 10,000
Description
Italy is increasing spending to cope with the largest COVID-19 outbreak outside of China. More than US$28 billion has been set aside -- three times more than the amount initially allocated. The country has more than 10,000 confirmed cases, and 60 million Italians have been told to stay home. Several European nations have banned Italians from crossing their borders. However, Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for all EU countries to work together, saying experts have told her that up to 70% of the population might become infected. Meanwhile, UK junior health minister Nadine Dorries has tested positive for the virus.
