Lack of testing could mask extent of COVID-19 outbreak in India
Description
The number of COVID-19 cases across South Asia has surged to nearly 500. Pakistan is the hardest-hit in the region with 247 cases, and it has closed all land borders. Meanwhile, India has more than 150 confirmed cases, but experts believe the actual number is much higher due to lack of testing. Only those who have a recent travel history or exposure to a COVID-19 positive patient are being tested, while those with coronavirus symptoms cannot get tested. In a country of 1.3 billion people, only 72 government-run labs are authorised to run tests. For example, the most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, there is only one testing centre for 77 million people.
