At #10 a wonderful Figural Sterling Key Wind Music Box featuring Automaton Song Bird was sold at Thomas Cornell Galleries in Belport NY for $2,500. I love these works. They are always a conversation piece.
#9 Three Webb Cameo Glass Perfumes crushed it at $2,745 at Nadeaus in Windsor Ct. They had a great auction and have a few lots that made this weeks list. Perfume bottles have always been in that sleeper catagory for me. You have to pay attention when they come up for sales in box lot auctions and at estate sales because they are often missed and especially by those cleaning out an estate.
#8 Set of 4 Buccellati Silver Figures. Standing at approx 3" tall, these miniatures sure got some attention when the hammered for $3,050. They had a $300-500 estimate so I am sure everyone was suprized but the bidders that wanted them. Buccellati is not the household name in sterling like Like Wallace, Tiffany, Rogers but it's a premier name you should learn. It's money !
#7 I am always telling you to watch for key date coins and the 1871 CC Seated Liberty Dollar did not dissapoint...Graded by NGC @ VG8 which is very low on the condition scale if you are not familiar but the shear rarity being one of only 1,376 minted made this guy soar at Matthew Bullock Auction Galley in Ontario IL...Matt is a great guy and get great sales. Keep on eye on him.
#6 Is furniture on the rise? This 13 pc Gothic style dining room set at Naduas brought a staggering $9,150. Furniture has been so soft as most know in the antique and auction world and that was always okay with me as it was heavy anyway....just kidding, but seriously, I have now seen a trend nation wide of rising prices as people may be starting to realize how well made it is and you know they are not making more of it. Plus styles and trends change so period come back, but overall, maybe people are finnally "going green"....if you talk the talk, walk the walk and buy at auction....i should coin that phrase.
#5 American Art is alive and well and I love Guy Wiggins Paintings. His snowy East Coast Landscapes take my home to my childhood. And at Clars on the other coast (in San Fran) a 12" by 16" beauty just hammered out at $47,500 !
#4 This is my, "What the hell am I missing here ?"....A graded gem mint 1993 Derek Jeter rookie card from the Upper Deck's SP Foil set sold for $168,000 at Robert Edward Auction in Los Angeles...you heard me. $168,000....
At #3...Superman's Cape....I mean The original cape worn by actor Christopher Reeve in the movie Superman from 1978...it sold for $193,750 at the Icons & Idols Hollywood Auction just held by Julien’s in Los Angeles...so i guess you have to figure, I could by a jeep and jeters card or supermans cape ? Wow....
Okay....here's #2 and I still have the Derek Jeters from #4 but at #2 is a Sports Memorabilia thing I get, most likely because it's americana, and a marks a Historical turning point in the world...it's the 1936 Olympic gold medal awarded to Jesse Owens. This particular medal was gifted to his Olympic teammate and lifelong friend John Terpak, Sr.....it sold for $615,000 in an online auction by Goldin Auctions...thats awesome and is a museum piece.
But here we go....we are at #1 and this has all the bells and whistles of auction gold. Its the Ludwig, oyster black pearl, three-piece drum kit that Ringo Starr played on stage and television with the Beatles in the early 1960s. Estimated to bring $300,000 to $500,000, it sold at Julien’s for $2.1 million – a world auction record for any drum kit....that's just awesome and amazing !
