Megalodon - 7 prehistoric creatures that are scarier than dinosaurs
Probably you’re familiar with many creatures coming in unusual shapes in the world. However, have you ever wondered how bizarre they are in the prehistory? Today video will give you the answer. As the matter of fact, these animals are extinct now, except for their fossil
1. Titanoboa
Titanoboa is the biggest python ever. When bringing its size and spinal fossil to compare with those of modern snakes and pythons, researchers estimate that a fully-grown was about 15m long and weighed around 1.1 ton, 10 times heavier than a fully-grown Anaconda.
2. Sarcosuchus
Sarcosuchus existed during the Cretaceous era, contemporary with dinosaurs. They are not direct ancestors of modern crocodiles but are close relatives.
Sarcosuchus looks quite similar to the Indian Gharials, which are now in danger of extinction.
3. Megalodon
It's believed that the oceans were dominated by bloodthirsty monsters 20 million years ago.
It is Megalodon - the giant shark with a body that was at least 18m long and serrated teeth. With such a scary look, Megalodon becomes an inspirational image for filmmakers, novelists and scientists alike.
Some people even think that Megalodon still lives somewhere in the ocean, like the story in the movie 'Meg'.
It's just a fictional idea anyway, because Megalodon is officially extinct. But which creature could have caused Megalodon’s extinction?
According to the latest fossil evidence, the culprit seems to be a creature that still exists. They are also kings, creatures on the top of the ocean's food chain.
Scientists think this giant python is the leader in the food chain in the swamp forests of Colombia.
Perhaps the favorable sources of food, warm weather, and swamp ecosystem are the factors that make them grow that big.
Scientists have not been able to explain why the python was that big, but there is speculation that Colombia during the Paleocene Epoch was a tropical area with the average temperature of 32 Celsius degrees.
It’s the warm climate at that time made these cold-blooded pythons to be larger than their relatives today.
4. Giant centipede
Centipede inheritantly freaks people out but when it comes to the giant one from Amazon, many people even feel creepy because the creature’s body is up to 12inch long.
Amazonian giant centipede in general are carnivorous. They eat insects, lizards, frogs, snakes, birds, mice and even bats or Tarantula.
Centipedes are multi-legged creatures belonging to an arthropod group.
5. Gigantopithecus blacki
Gigantopithecus blacki existed 9 million years ago whose height is 3 meters and weight is 6 quintals.
They’re considered as the biggest primates on earth. The scientists are studying Gigantopithecus blacki, a shaggy, bipedal ape twice the size of an adult human.
They lived in the forests of Southeast Asia before hundreds of thousand years ago extinction.
November 13, a research published on Nature had an intention to determine the position of G. blacki in primate family tree.
G. blacki is much bigger than the great apes that alive today. It is about 3m high and weighs up to 600 kg. However, their fossils are rare and hard to find. Researchers could have excavated only a few thousand teeth and 4 incomplete jaws, leading to many questions about the evolution and shape of them.
