What if Megalodon wasn’t the scariest creature that roamed the waters? What if there were far scarier creatures lurking at the bottom of the ocean, feasting on the carcasses of megalodons? If the thought of megalodon gives you chills, then the 10 creature we are going to talk about will make you poop your pants. From megalodon’s biggest rival to the biggest creature ever born, here are 10 sea monsters scarier than the megalodon! Let’s begin:
Number 10. Livyatan Melvillei
Livyatan Melvillei and Megalodon were two of the most terrifying ocean predators this planet has ever seen. These are the kind of creatures that have spawned myth and legend since mankind first went into the water. Even though megalodon is more famous, many researchers believe that Livyatan Melvillei would have won in a duel between the two monsters. Livyatan is a fairly recent discovery, first described back in 2008. It had the biggest teeth of any animal to ever live at over a foot long. Some animals, such as elephants, have longer tusks, but Livyatan’s teeth were built for action. Modern sperm whales lack functional teeth in their upper jaw and feed by suction, diving deep to hunt squid. Leviathan on the other hand had massive teeth in both its upper and lower jaws, and a skull that supported large jaw muscles. Its head was 3 meter in length and 1.9 meter wide. It may have hunted like raptorial killer whales, which use their teeth to tear off flesh. Based on the skull length, it has been estimated that Livyatan could grow up to 17.5m long, about the same size as a modern adult male sperm whale.
Number. 9 Plesiosaurs
Look, when I think of scary, I think of large teeth, a jaw that can grind a small plane, and huge menacing eyes. I generally don't think of a lumbering long-necked turtle-like creature that looks like it could smother just about anything to death. Regardless of this, fear is the overwhelming emotion people feel when they see the Plesiosaurs. This animal lived over a hundred and thirty million years ago and looks like something from the imagination of a disturbed child. If you think that the Plesiosaurs look like the Loch Ness monster, you may not be wrong. In fact, this animal served as the inspiration of the Loch Ness monster, and its unique anatomy means that it’s the subject of a lot of controversy in the scientific community. When Mary Anning, a renowned palaeontologist, first discovered the bones of this prehistoric sea creature, people said that she had forged it. Why? They simply could not believe that such an animal could exist. But she was right, and other fossils proved it.
