Mokhudu Machaba’s Tears Of Joy on Finding Out She Is a Global Teacher Prize Top 10 Finalist
Description
Mokhudu Machaba’s tears of joy as Stephen Fry announces that she is top ten finalist for The Global Teacher Finalist 2020. Congratulations Mokhudu! Now, more than ever we must tell your story and shine a light on the world’s teachers.
Maths teacher Mokhudu Machaba from Ngwanamago Primary School, Polokwane, Limpopo, South Africa, was shortlisted for the Global Teacher Prize 2020, after being selected from over 12,000 nominations and applications from over 140 countries around the world.
With the use of an internet connection, cell phones and laptops Mokhudu ensures that her students are getting the edtech support that she never had.
Mokhudu faced many childhood challenges on the road to achieving her own education. Her school was seven or eight kilometres away from home, and getting there involved crossing a river; she often had no shoes and used a rice sack as a school bag. While Mokhudu herself had to learn without much technological help, she has ensured that the opposite is true for her own students. Mokhudu obtained laptops from the ISPA Super Teacher awards, Microsoft, and the South African government – all by showcasing her students’ activities. Mokhudu aims to develop a centre where young people can learn entrepreneurial skills and robotics – catching up with their peers across the world and creating global citizens.
