Muhammad makes list of top 10 baby names in the US for the first time

Did you know that the name Muhammad has become one of the top 10 most popular baby names for boys in the United States?

Now the name, which honours Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and translates loosely to “the most praised one”, has been steadily climbing over the years and reached the top 100 in 2013.

The data comes from almost 600,000 patients who shared their baby’s name with the American organisation BabyCenter.

Now as you might imagine, the rankings combine multiple spellings of the name Muhammad.

Generally, names of Arabic origin are also on the rise in America, with names like Aaliyah making it into the top 10 names for baby girls.

Now the name Muhammad is no stranger to America.

The name can be found in different variations in American censuses dating back hundreds of years, including individuals like Bampett Muhammad, who fought during the American revolutionary war.

And Cassius Clay, the best boxer whoever lived, who famously changed his name to Muhammad Ali after converting to Islam.

Now Muslims currently make up just 1% of America’s total population. But that number is expected to double by the year 2050.
