As cane toads infiltrate deeper into NSW, recent sightings on the state's Mid North Coast have sparked concerns more native frogs are being caught up in a fatal case of mistaken identity.
Of the 32 suspected cane toads reported on average in NSW annually, more than a third have been misidentified for Australian frogs, according to the Department of Primary Industries (DPI).
A feeling of dread dawned on Coffs Harbour resident Rachael Wood at the sight of a taxidermied cane toad and an endangered giant barred frog held side by side during a recent tour of the local Frogarium — a zoo of native Australian frogs.
