Quick Facts:
• Debut Studio Album released in February 1984 by Sire Records.
• Reached #2 on UK chart.
• Ranked #473 on Rolling Stone Top 500 Albums
1. Reel Around the Fountain – Morrissey was quoted in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine saying that the song is about “loss of innocence that until one has a physical commitment with another person."
2. You’ve Got Everything Now – Morrissey expresses his bitterness towards a person whom he implies is only faking his happiness, because Morrissey believes that having a casual life isn’t enough.
3. Miserable Lie – Morrissey noted, “I’m really ready to be burned at the stake in total defence of that record. It means so much to me that I could never explain, however long you gave me."
4. Pretty Girls Make Graves – Girl wants him for sex but he is “not the man you think I am”. Another great tone set by Marr that is equal parts relaxing and ominous.
5. The Hand That Rocks the Cradle – The first song Morrissey and Marr ever wrote together. About protecting an innocent child and raising him amidst the dangers of the world.
6. This Charming Man – 2nd Single. Morrissey said of the song's lyrics: "I really like the idea of the male voice being quite vulnerable, of it being taken and slightly manipulated, rather than there being always this heavy machismo thing that just bores everybody." Lovely jangly guitar riff that is juxtaposed with a danceable beat.
7. Still Ill – The lyrics of the song reference a nostalgia for the past, Morrissey's dislike for working at regular jobs, and his feelings about someone he had kissed "in the old days" but feels differently towards when kissing them at present.
8. Hand in Glove – 1st single. Morrissey said that after Marr gave him a demo cassette of the song, he went home and wrote lyrics for it in the span of two hours, conscious of the fact that it would be the group's first recorded work.
9. What Difference Does It Make – The song was one of the band's first significant chart hits, peaking at No. 12 in the UK Singles Chart. However, Morrissey has said "What Difference Does It Make?" is among his least favorite songs of the Smiths'.
10. I Don’t Owe You Anything– As stated in the book Mozipedia – The Encyclopedia of Morrissey and The Smiths, in 2005, Morrissey said that this was one of the few songs he’d written which now made him ‘shudder’ and, to date, is the only Smiths song he’s officially disowned.
11. Suffer Little Children – The song is about the Moors murders that took place on Saddleworth Moor, which overlooks Manchester, between 1963 and 1965.
