Africa is where the United Nations has deployed seven of its 13 peacekeeping operations – which globally comprise more than 100,000 military, police, and civilian personnel. 80 per cent of China’s UN peacekeepers are on the continent. Most of the Chinese peacekeepers in Africa are assigned to four of the UN biggest missions there, helping to maintain peace and security, protecting vulnerable groups and supporting development. Beijing is among the world’s top 10 largest contributors of troops to the UN and among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, China is the biggest contributor of troops who don the UN force’s distinctive blue berets or helmets. China is also the second-largest financial contributor to UN peacebuilding efforts, after the US. In this explainer we explore what China’s UN peacekeeping mission in Africa looks like, and why Beijing is increasing its role in peacebuilding efforts on the continent.
