SUPPRESSION PHASE: Morrison signals ‘next phase’ of coronavirus combat strategy
Description
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has revealed his government is preparing to enter the “suppression phase” in dealing with the deadly coronavirus pandemic in Australia.
In front of a press conference in Canberra on Friday, Mr Morrison said the National Cabinet is "very focused" on the road ahead and signalled a change of tack as the government prepares to move into the approach for addressing COVID-19.
He said as a government and a country, “we need to continue to keep the pressure on, we need to continue to suppress the virus”.
"This virus writes its own rules".
However, the prime minister did praise the Australian public and the efforts of all to stem the spread of the disease saying, "we are now at single digit rates of growth, but we need to do more”.
He also signalled after the new "suppression phase" the government will move to a “recovery phase” in the future.
It was revealed the government is set to release a new “daily dashboard” which will contain all relevant coronavirus “key statistics” and which will be available for viewing on the health.gov website.
Mr Morrison also addressed the issue of churches and places of worship leading into Easter saying they “will be considered as workplaces” for those who conduct religious streaming videos and take part in the religious services from the premises.
However, he reaffirmed “churches are not open; places of worship are not open” for members of the public.
