Thursday Week 12: Blue(02/03/2020)
Description
We tend to forget that as painters, especially when reflecting upon nature, we don't paint things. We don't paint skin, or grass or sky. We paint the effect of light upon those very things. Because depending on our lighting condition, the manner in which those things are perceived, and based on how our perception has been shaped by our past experiences, two human beings will never see the exact same thing when looking at the same stimulus. Today we examine the frailty of perception and the acknowledgement that while it may be true that when we train as painters the most important aspect is to learn how to see, there is no universal way of understanding observation. Our hope is that we can create a strong enough bond with our tools so that we can evoke with a certain degree of clarity the moments of nature that move us. We paint because nature has provoked us, and we feel an instinctual urge to comprehend why our attention was roused.
