A mountain lion freezes as it hears the trigger of a remote camera trap in a remote forest in Wyoming, USA. I rely so much on remote camera traps to get images of wildlife and people often ask me if my images are fake. Well my images are not fake! They rely on a few technical pieces of high-end camera equipment and a whole lot of time! Time mainly being spent on composing my frame and this can literally take hours. Take for instance this frame...look at what I tried to do. I used the branches to lead your eye into a clearing and positioned my beam (an invisible laser) so that the mountain lion would be photo captured at the exact point in the frame where there is a gap. Now the part that looks fake: the light. Yes I do use some light and this is something I have developed, perfected and practiced for over 30 years. Lighting is the cherry on the cake but it is not everything and composition, finding a good subject (human or animal or landscape) and telling a good story are all equally important.
