This is a data visualisation showing the All-Time Top 10 NHL (National Hockey League) Teams between 1967 and 2019 based on total points accumulated by each team during that period (regular season PLUS playoffs). Which team sits at the top of the ultimate standings after more than 50 years of NHL?

Points for each team were recorded starting from the 1967-68 season (after the 1967 NHL Expansion took place, doubling the number of teams in the NHL from 6 to 12) up to and including the 2018-19 season. This period from the 1967 NHL Expansion up until the present day is what we've defined as the 'modern 'era.

Standard NHL scoring:

Win = 2 PTS
Overtime or shootout loss = 1 PT
Tie = 1 PT (except after and including the 2005-06 season when this was eliminated)
Loss= 0 PTS

Please note although the names of some teams have changed since 1967 for the sake of consistency the current team names are used.

Please note there is no data for the 2004-05 season due to the labor management dispute that year.
