TOP 10 SCARY ANIMALS FOUND IN RIVERS
You’ve probably seen footage of the feared piranhas in their hunting frenzy. They are perhaps the best-known terrifying river animals, largely due to the popularity of horror film series like “Piranha”, “Mega Piranha”, and “Piranha 3-D”.
But they are not the only scary river animals with sharp teeth that are ferociously efficient at ripping off flesh in a matter of seconds.
From the most tranquil estuaries in Asia, to powerful surging streams in Europe, and the most frantic rivers of the South Americas, there are a lot of dark, creepy, and absolutely terrifying river animals swimming below the water surface.
These are the 10 most scary animals found in rivers
#10. Nile Crocodile
The Nile crocodile is Africa’s largest and most feared crocodile and this list won’t be complete without this toothy jawed, long scaly tailed predator of Africa’s rivers, marshes, and mangrove swamps. They particularly live throughout sub-Saharan Africa, the Nile Basin, and Madagascar
At more than 4 meters long and weighing over 500 kilos, this is the second largest crocodilian, beaten only by the massive saltwater crocodile, tipping the scales at close to a tonne and measuring 6 meters long!
The Nile is generally considered to be much more aggressive than other crocodilians, especially American crocs and alligators. It has a reputation for being a ferocious predator, taking down every size of prey from zebras to hippos. And, its proximity to human residences makes it run frequently into humans, who unfortunately end up being the crocs dinner.
More than 200 people die each year in the jaws of the Nile crocodile, hence its deserved reputation as a vicious man-eater.
#9. Goliath Tigerfish
Deep in Africa’s Congo River is where the Goliath Tigerfish calls home. And from the name, you know that this is a large and heavily-built, toothy, scary-looking fish.
In fact, it is the largest member of the Tigerfish clan native to, not just the Congo river basin, but also the Lualaba River, Lake Upemba, and Lake Tanganyika in Africa.
The Goliath is a tough fish to catch, but it’s not impossible. The largest specimen ever caught – and this was a deadly catch tackled by biologist and extreme angler Jeremy Wade – was a massive fish reaching lengths of 2 meters and weighing up to 45 kilos.
With such a massive size and their long jagged, crocodile-like, razor-sharp teeth, the adult Goliath Tigerfish is able to easily overpower any fish it desires. This terrifying piscivore uses its long, sharp teeth to tear chunks of meat off their prey -- and when those teeth slam down on prey, it's a clean, almost surgical cut. A characteristic that has earned it the nickname “bully of the Congo basin.”
#8. Piranha
They are the real horror of the Amazon river. Their rows of interlocking, razor-sharp teeth and a reputation for feeding frenzies, these predators patrolling the wetlands of South America can strip a fish to the bone in a matter of seconds.
It is said that over 40 species inhabit the freshwaters of South America from the Orinoco River Basin in Venezuela up to the Paraná River in Argentina. The most commonly known species is the red-bellied piranha.
It is considered to be one of the most dangerous and most aggressive species of piranha. Despite its bad rap as a terrifying predator, the red-bellied piranha grows only to about 51 centimeters long. But tiny as they are, piranhas are ravenous indiscriminate killers when hungry. Once a source of food is found, they swarm very quickly and nip bits of flesh as they collide with their prey.
It is worth noting, however, that piranhas are mostly scavengers usually preying on the mortally wounded animal; those that are injured, weak, and dying after other predators like the Dorados have initiated an attack that left countless fish injured in the frenzy.
#7. Snakehead
The snakehead fish is like something from a bad horror film. Their snake-like appearance and sharp, dagger-like, canine teeth lining the lower jaw obviously look scary, but these fish get their bad rap from their invasive nature, literally eating whole species of fish native to an ecosystem to which the snakehead has just been introduced.
The northern Snakehead native to China, southern Siberia, North Korea, and South Korea are more dangerous when introduced to new ecosystems, particularly being declared an ecological threat when they were introduced in the United States and Europe.
