10 The online RPG Final Fantasy 14 held a special promotion wherein if you bought fried chicken from a Lawson convenience store, the cash register played the in-game victory fanfare!

9 The man who played Segata Sanshiro, Hiroshi Fujioka is actually a well rounded actor, who at one point in his career shared top billing with a giant crab!

8 The Great Giana Sisters, which looks juuuuust like Super Mario Bros, somehow survived into the modern day without ever being legally challenged by the Big N!

7 Monster Strike, an iPhone game that you’ve never heard of, but makes more money than Pokemon Go had a series of snacks issued during the run of the anime series based on the game!

6 Phantasy Star 2 had its beginnings and took a few plot points from a girl who submitted her own ideas to a contest held by Sega

5 Megaman is more than a game, it’s a brand of lightbulbs in Europe and if you say it the wrong way in Greece, you’re gonna get a slap in the face!

4 Twinbee was so popular in Japan that it had its own radio show! And the theme song from it became a top 20 hit! Oh and there’s a real life line of aircraft called Twinbee too!

3 A song called Monkey Magic, released in 1978 was such a hit it gave birth to a renaissance of the novel Journey to the West, which it was based on, leading to multiple games, anime and live action shows about Monkey!

2 Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of Pokemon spent his early days doing various things behind the scenes in the gaming industry, one of which was playing games live on the radio with famous celebrities as part of the show All Night Nippon!!

1 The shooting game Parodius Da! Has a certain sound effect heard only once near the end of the game, that was later used in a TV show and now has taken on a life of its own being used nearly everyday in Japanese TV Dramas, comedies and anime!

And There you have the top 10 things that you learned by watching GTV in 2019 because these things were completely unknown until I dug them up! If you haven’t seen them either, then you probably missed the best of 2018 when I told you about the long lost Hulk Hogan manga books, the real life lyrics to the theme from punch out, and that Sharp once sold an oven called Famicom! And that probably means you missed the best of 2017 where I showed off a lost Mario anime film, and explained where JJ and Jeff actually came from. Don’t forget the best of 2016 too, when I showed off Phanto masks From Super Mario 2 that were real, and that the three sacred treasures from Kid Icarus are real too!
