Are you eating enough fruits and vegetables? I really hope so. Eating them can change your life for the best and keep you in very good health. Apples, strawberries, bananas, oranges...all it takes is a trip to the supermarket to get your hands on some of them! With so many options, I’m sure there’s more than one fruit that you like. But if you feel like there aren’t enough options, I want to introduce you to “10 Tropical Fruits You’ve Probably Never Heard Of.” Even if you live in the tropics, I’m sure you’ll find some rare fruits from other parts of the world that grow in weather that’s similar to that of your hometown. And if you don’t live in the tropics and you’ve never been to a tropical country, then I’m pretty sure that most (or maybe all) of the fruits on this list will be rare to you. In fact, today’s best pick is so rare, that I don’t even know if I’ll ever be able to try it.

Sapote

This rare fruit comes from a tree that is native to Central America, Cuba, and some parts of Mexico. There are different variations of it, but the most popular one is the one called Mamey. The fruit is now popular in the Caribbean and now you can even find it in Florida, where lots of people use it to make drinks and desserts, just like in other parts of Latin America. It’s been known that Sapote is a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C, fiber, and other nutrients. With this fleshy fruit, you make milkshakes, smoothies, marmalade, and ice cream. And that’s not all! You can also get oil from its seed, and some people use that oil to cook and to make soap and aromatherapy products. This fruit is rare for a lot of us, but I’m sure we’ve come across some of its products at some point in our lives. There’s also this other fruit called Sapodilla, which is from the same family as Sapote Mamey. Sapodilla tastes like sweet root beer, but its seeds are smaller than the ones in Sapote Mamey. Surely, these fruits are yummy and unique.

Jackfruit

Not only it’s an exotic fruit, but it’s also a very large and heavy one. This spiky fruit is native to southern India and the rainforest region of Malaysia. Sometimes, this fruit can be as big as 3 feet long and 70 pounds of weight. That’s way heavier than an average newborn baby. Some people describe its flavor as a combination of mango, pineapple, and banana. And the ones who’ve tried its seeds say that they taste like chocolate. In Southeast Asia, this fruit is very popular in local cuisine. Some countries like Indonesia use it to make curries and stews. In recent years, vegans have found jackfruit as a great alternative to pork and other meats. For that reason, you can now substitute the meat in your pork tacos or pulled-pork sandwiches for jackfruit and you won’t even be able to tell the difference. How cool is that?

Miracle Berry

Do you like sweet things? Well, apparently, if you eat a miracle berry then anything you eat within the following hour will taste sweet to you. That’s great news for a lot of people who love sweets, but I’m sure some of you might find this a bit threatening. The miracle berry is a small fruit that comes from West Africa. Its use has been documented since the 18th century when a European explorer found local people eating this berry prior to having a meal. At some point in the 1980s, this fruit also gained fame in the US, where people started to commercialize it in order to make non-sweet foods become more appealing to human taste. However, this effort became compromised when food authorities classified the components of this fruit as food additives and were hesitant about its safety. As of today, this fruit is still used in West Africa to sweeten palm wine and to improve the flavor of cornbread. In other parts of the world, the consumption and importing of this fruit have a lot of regulations, and some countries even declared it an “illegal sweetener.”
