Top 12 Tips for Smart Parenting
1. Assign daily chores to your children in order to make them more productive.
2. Teach them some social skills: If you want your child to transform into a successful leader, you must make it a point to impart some social skills to her or him. Invite friends and relatives, and show your kids how to socialize. Kids learn quickly.
3. Set high standards: Never force your child to excel in something that she or he is not interested in. Identify what your child enjoys doing the most and then set some meaningful benchmarks.
4. Communicate well: As a father, how often do you communicate with your spouse and kids? As a mother, do you take the initiative to regularly organize a conversation session for the entire family? Talking to each other more often, at least on a daily basis, helps maintain healthy family relationships and prevents complications. Kids learn to effectively troubleshoot when they listen to meaningful and intellectual conversations.
5. Improve their math skills: Surprised? You need not be. Kids who hone math skills early on get a distinct advantage in high school and college. We need math skills everywhere, don’t we?
6. Value effort: Parents of successful children understand the importance of timely (and honest) appreciation. Kids feel motivated when they see you appreciate their genuine efforts, regardless of the outcome. Of course, you should feel free to share constructive feedback as and when required without hesitating.
7. Be authoritative, not authoritarian: Children respect grownups because they know they can learn a lot from them. However, smart parents understand the difference between being an authoritative resource person and being a non-democratic authoritarian.
8. Tell them what “grit” is: Grit is defined as firm determination to attain an identified goal in the long run through relentless efforts. Teach your kids to be persistent. Tell them that it is ok to fail, but also tell them that giving up should never be considered as an available option.
9. Tell them what self-control is all about: This one is relatively easy. Is your child watching TV or playing with electronic gadgets for 1 or 2 hours every day? Make sure she or he does not do so for more than a few minutes every day. Avoid TV and gadgets completely if possible. Let your child spend most of her or his time in other truly constructive activities.
10. Introduce them to the six “Cs:” Children need these to succeed—collaboration, communication, content, critical thinking, creative innovation, and confidence. Make sure you emphasize on all six.
11. Celebrate curiosity: Never say “no” to an idea proposed by your child, no matter how silly it is. Conduct a brainstorming session and let your child gain deeper insights.
12. Do not stress yourself: Laugh more often with your kids and family! This prevents the build-up of stress and negativity.
