Description
This video presents Top 6 respiratory illnesses and diseases
Asthma
Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition causing difficulty breathing because of inflammation of the airways. Dry cough, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath are common symptoms of asthma.
2. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ( COPD)
COPD is an umbrella term for several respiratory illnesses in which the patients can’t breathe or can’t exhale properly. Common symptoms are shortness of breath and coughing up sputum (mucus from the lungs) in the morning. COPD is difficult to identify as it is often mixed up with the gradual aging process and body deterioration.
3. Emphysema
Emphysema, a form of COPD, is a serious respiratory disease caused by smoking. People with emphysema can’t exhale properly as the air sacs in the lungs are destroyed by cigarette smoke to a point where they aren’t able to recover.
Emphysema develops slowly over the course of several years and there is no cure, however, quitting smoking can slow down the progression.
4. Lung Cancer
Lung cancer can occur in any part of the lungs but is more likely to develop in the main part of the lungs near the air sacs. DNA mutations in the lungs cause the multiplication of irregular cells, creating an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, or a tumor. Due to these tumors, the lungs can’t function properly.
5. Pneumonia
Pneumonia is a lung disease characterized by inflammation of the airspaces in the lungs, especially in the air sacs. Pneumonia can be caused by bacterial, viral or fungal. Most people can recover in one to three weeks, but in some cases, the disease can turn extremely severe and even life-threatening.
6. Pleural Effusion
Pleural effusion is a status in which excess fluid builds between the lung and the chest wall. The fluid can accumulate due to pneumonia, cancer or congestive heart failure. Patients may experience increasing chest discomfort and shortness of breath.
