Description

The Griffin Survivor Strong has been reborn. It’s much better than the old Survivor Strong. The old case had a score of 3.5 Eh’s out of 5, the new Survivor Strong gets 3.8 Eh’s out of 5. The average case ranks around 3.7 so it did make a significant improvement.

The standout feature are the tapered edges of the case which results in great iPhone usage.

The downside is that tapering requires the case to be a little wider which may offset the great handling if you have smaller hands.

At MREH, Monty and I base our reviews on actual usage. And I’ll be honest with you, that gets boring. It’s a fcking phone case.

BUT on our journey of being the best reviewers, under Monty’s leadership, we‘re going to figure out how to exactly test the materials in a case. Because this thin case, based on my experience, shouldn’t provide 10ft worth of drop protection but the marketing fluff says so…

The iPhone sits well in this case. Edges are tight though there is a slight gap on the sleep button. The biggest issue with the case is the back. It’s way too slick which means your iPhone slides around easily and fingerprinting is going to be an issue.

The Survivor strong is very thin, adding ~2.5mm to the overall thickness and actually feels thinner because of the tapered edge. That edge greatly improves the handling of the iPhone. BUT the benefit of the tapered edge is offset by the width of the case. It’s not terrible but it is noticeable. The case weights 34 g’s which is pretty light. It’s so light that Griffin claims that it is a little over an ounce. An ounce is 28g, 34g is ~20% more. Does that quantify as a little over?

The overall texture of the case is top notch. I have no idea what Griffin did or whatever mother company that owns Griffin did but the matte finish, coupled with the grid texture is awesome. It’s not overly aggressive BUT isn’t slick either. If only they could figure out a way to incorporate on the clear, glossy back.

I do have my reservations about the wear and tear. My case showed a lot of little scuffs after one tiny accidental drop on the sidewalk. It’s definitely not going to bode well in the protection section.

Overall, from a build quality perspective, I’m very impressed with Griffin. I’ve always thought of them as a big bulky case company but these new iterations of cases are slick.

When it comes to using my iPhone in the case, I had no concerns. The buttons on the case are usable albeit a little tough and like the RIngke clear case, there is a slight gap between the case and the actual button.

The lower than average case edges do not get in the way of screen access and I had not have any issues with the port or the camera. When it comes to one-handed usage, well, like I said at the beginning of the video, going to be great if you don’t have small hands.

When it comes to protection, the Griffin Survivor Strong is supposedly drop rated to 10ft and is protected by FORTICORE. A material that provides an extra 40% in drop protection.

40%. That’s a big number. Especially when compared to traditional case materials.

What are traditional case materials? It doesn’t say. This bit of marketing fluff reeks of Zagg’s claim of being stronger than normal soda lime glass.

Now what is Forticore? A quick google search brings up the site Forticoretech.com, which has one page, with the standout phrase being “Simultaneous cushioning and shock absorption are in full force”.

WHAT does that even mean?

Now if you click on the HOW it works link, it brings you to the middle of the page which basically says, you’re not smart enough to understand anything.

AND this is the next phase of MREH’s evolution. We’re going to do a deep dive into the mechanics of shock absorption. BECAUSE case companies have started this annoying trend of bedazzling us with fancy names for their supposed super tough materials.

So after all the drops, the only thing I'd suggest is to don't drop it face first...
