In a recent video from Canguro English or Kangaroo English which is an Australian channel about learning English and language learning, Christian said that something which will help you to speak better English is to put the grammar book down. This will improve your English and help you learn English grammar. Do you want to learn to speak English well? Even though this is almost a language memes video with funny phrases in English about Russians speaking English better than me, it’s important to understand the context of what Christian is saying; he’s not saying that you don’t need grammar to speak English, and he himself has videos about English grammar, the various tenses etc it’s just that it’s very common for non-native English speakers, particularly from Russia and China, who study English as a second language, far more students study grammar too much rather than too little. I'm Australian so although Russians are telling me that I don't speak English... yes, Australians speak English. It is our native language. Some of us even know how to speak English properly. Do native speakers make mistakes? Yes. Do native speakers of English make mistakes that they think are correct? Sometimes but it's much rarer than Ukrainian people doing it. How to speak foreign languages is what my whole channel is about. You can also use these videos to improve your English listening.
So yes, I do speak a language fluently (apart from English). Yes native speakers make mistakes, but not ones that don't even make sense like these.
I’m not saying grammar is not important, in fact the best definition I’ve heard so far of fluency is from Canguro English, who said that fluency is a matter of automatic control of the grammar, into which you can then place correct vocabulary. That’s an excellent definition of the scale of fluency in English. But studying a language as if it’s mathematics clearly doesn’t work. The guy has been basically brainwashed into thinking that the way he studied English was a 100% coverage, flawless system and is so convinced of that any time he sees something that disagrees with his English, he thinks it's wrong. Strictly adhering to a single method of language teaching produces a narrow and incorrect understanding of a large and complex entity, and in some cases, convinces the learner that anything they hear in the language that is outside of that incorrect understanding must be itself incorrect.
