Daniel Pearl, the South Asia Bureau Chief of Wall Street Journal, was kidnapped in Karachi by Pakistani Islamists in January 2002. Daniel Pearl was beheaded by Al-Qaeda terrorist and 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM) nine days after his kidnapping. Video of the beheading of Daniel Pearl was released on Internet. According to a detailed investigative report by Georgetown University named 'The Pearl Project' gives detailed account of the kidnapping and murder of Daniel Pearl. Pearl Project established the role of Al-Qaeda and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM) in the beheading of Daniel Pearl. However, in their haste to close the Daniel Pearl Kidnapping and murder case, Pakistani authorities pinned the charge of murder on Omar Sheikh and his three colleagues- Fahad Naseem, Salman Saqib and Sheikh Adil. According to the investigations done by Pearl Project, these four men were actually involved only in the kidnapping plan.

The Sindh High Court in Karachi acquitted Omar Sheikh, Fahad Naseem, Salman Saqib and Sheikh Adil. Pakistan's Supreme Court has also refused to suspend the acquittal of these four men.
