Description

The Spigen Tough Armor has been one of my goto cases for years. BUT did you guys know that Spigen redesigned parts of it for the iPhone 11? Impact foam!

The addition of the impact foam is essentially another layer of protection for your iPhone so when I update the scoring system for the iPhone 12’s, there’s a good chance the Spigen Tough Armor is going to rank even better in my Top 10 list.

Now I realized over the last couple of weeks, the reviews felt a little more negative than usual and that’s because in the quest of doing a review every day, I was looking at products that didn’t make the cut in my Top 10 lists.

I haven’t done a stand alone Tough Armor review in years so I figure, why not? If you’re looking for a no-nonsense case, something that works, can take a drop and has a kickstand, just get the Spigen Tough Armor.

At MREH, Monty and I base our reviews on actual usage. And this usage is broken down into domains. Design, functionality and protection are domains I talk about lots but I there’s also time. And as I’ve said before, I’m a Spigen Tough Armor connoisseur. Well, since the iPhone 5’s anyways.

So here’s a little Tough Armor history. Back when the iPhone 5’s were a thing, Spigen made the Tough armor from two materials. A TPU sleeve wrapped in a piece of polycarbonate. This design generally didn’t change throughout the iPhone 6. Somewhere between the iPhone 6 and 6s’s, they came out with a variation of the Tough Armor, the Tough Armor Tech which featured a fancier back with a port cover.

For the iPhone 7’s, Spigen made the Tough Armor a little tougher as they made the bottom of the case a little thicker and had speaker cutouts that forced the found to project forward instead of the bottom. They also removed the little nubs on the corners of the case to prevent the back from scratching. I think it was during this time that darker cases started getting a soft-rubber coating. Also, if I remember correctly, Spigen started integrating kickstands into the Tough Armor though it wasn’t available for every case.

Along came the 8’s and X’s and Spigen went back to the original speaker grill cutouts projecting sound through the bottom. Kickstands became standard with the Tough Armor. For the iPhone XS’s, the design remained the same with the exception of the camera cutout being tighter on the newer cases.

Along came the iPhone 11 and Spigen almost wiped the slate clean with the Tough Armor. The most obvious change is the addition of impact foam BUT with the memory foam removes the impact web designed that Spigen claims to improve drop protection.

The corners of the iPhone 11 Tough Armor have two notches in them that aren’t that noticeable, unlike the brutal corners on my Simply Carbon Fibre case (that review’s tomorrow). The corners are also slightly smaller which allows the Tough Armor to sit in your palm with a smaller footprint.

The iPhone 11 TOugh Armor is thicker than the iPhone XS version which makes since with the addition of the impact foam.

The case is still covered in a soft rubber coating that’s a bit more aggressive than the coating used on the Speck Presidio Pro and the fit of the iPhone is as usual, tight. The case will wear a bit over time as the matte finish on the TPU will wear off over time.

When it comes to using my iPhone in the Tough Armor, nothing has changed. Buttons are accessible though they sit flush with the case edge, the camera cutout on the iPhone 11 version has a shallower edge which I’m guessing reduces the effect of the flash bouncing back into the lens and cutouts on the case are large enough to use slightly larger cables. The case edge is a little shallower than other cases BUT still high enough to use a screen protector.

The only other notable functionality feature is the kickstand which works in both landscape orientations but not portrait.

When it comes to protection, well, the impact foam is the big add. BUT oddly enough, there is no impact foam in the corners which is usually where impact occurs. There’s swatches of foam along the back of the case and edges but not the corners. Apparently a pocket of air is still tougher than the impact foam?
