Coronavirus outbreak: Alberta's top doctor defends call to restrict mass gatherings into summer
Description
Alberta's chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw provided an update on the most recent numbers of COVID-19 cases in the province Friday and the government's ongoing response to the pandemic.
One day after telling Albertans that restrictions on mass gatherings will remain in effect at least through the summer, Hinshaw defended her recommendation on Friday, saying that if people don’t adhere to the restrictions and maintain physical distance between themselves and others, the “results can be explosive, far-reaching and deadly.”
Hinshaw also reported 297 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total in the province to 4,017. Five additional COVID-19 related deaths were announced, raising the total number of lives lost to 72.
She said three of the new cases were in a First Nation community within the Calgary zone, and that the infected individuals are in isolation.
On Thursday, it was announced that the Calgary Stampede would be cancelled, marking the first time in 100 years the event has not gone ahead.
