Description

Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said on Sunday a setback faced by Ottawa-based biotech company Spartan Bioscience after its rapid COVID-19 test was voluntarily recalled would not impact Canada’s target of completing 60,000 tests a day.

Tam said this is because the 60,000 provincial-territorial target is on the existing diagnostic or PCR tests that are already within public health laboratories.

She said, however, tests like the Spartan Bioscience rapid-testing device would allow rural and remote communities to become more independent of public health laboratories and limit the delays related to transportation.

Canada’s minister of public services and procurement, Anita Anand, also weighed in on the issue, stating Sunday that she considers this setback faced by the biotech firm to be “part of the process” in developing new technology.
