This tiny dim sum shop serves momos with a difference, says its owner, Dawa Lepcha, a migrant from Darjeeling into Bengaluru, “they are steamed fresh with the filling raw, which makes them juicier than other momos.” I put his claim to the test as I taste an assortment of momos - steamed, fried and sauced, spicy, in this snacky Gourmet On The Road outing. Enjoy!
Steamed Vegetable Momo
Stuffed with a cabbage, carrot, bean and capsicum filling that’s enlivened with a ginger-garlic and green chilli paste, this is a savoury momo, quite flavourful for a veggie option. If you like it spicy, go for the chilli sauce.
Rs. 60 (usd 0.8) for 8 pieces
7.5/10
Steamed Paneer Momo
I was quite cynical of this momo before I tasted it. But one bite and I changed my mind! If I were a vegetarian, I would be quite happy with this momo stuffed with soft paneer and slivers of green chilli. Flavourful enough to be eaten on its own minus the chutney.
Rs. 70 (usd 1) for 8 pieces
7.5/10
Steamed Chicken Momo
The chicken momo had spent a bit longer in the steamer than necessary, and therefore weak in the strength of the dumpling wrap. The chicken stuffing is the consistency of a soft paste, and though flavourful, a bit shy in asserting itself on the palate. I wish this momo was served hot though.
Rs. 70 (usd 1) for 8 pieces
7/10
Fried Chicken Momos
These deep-fried momos are crispy and crunchy outside and doughy inside. An interesting contrast of textures that makes for an interesting bite. Though I wasn’t a fan of its chatpata taste with the chaat masala that’s sprinkled quite liberally on the momo..
Rs. 80 (usd 1.1) for 8 pieces
7/10
Fried Chicken Momos in Szechuan Sauce
The Szechuan style spicy momo tops the ‘fiery’ chart here and is certainly not for the faint-hearted. All that you taste here is tonnes of chilli spice, the momo ends up being just a dumpling that has surrendered to the assault of the spicy sauce.
Rs. 100 (usd 1.4) for 8 pieces
6/10
